Still Life

Image
Chema Madoz is a Spanish photographer who really stands out due to the strange subject matter he usually chooses to photograph. Images such as the one above, featuring a bird cage against a sky, are left for the viewer to interpret as to what the meaning might be. This still is captured perfectly to show a cloud inside the cage as well. This still life of a match on wood is one of my favorites. The burnt match is positioned so that the natural patterns on the wood look like burn marks. I thought this was a very creative idea. The details in the wood is also very beautiful up close that you normally wouldn't take notice of. This photograph of burning pencils is another one I like. The pencils are arranged in a way to make the image look like a camp fire. This one probably has deep meaning behind it as pencils are used to draw and create yet here they are being burned. The blank background helps focus in on the subject matter of the image well. The black char on the pencils is anot...

Arnold Newman

https://3.img-dpreview.com/files/p/E~TS520x520~articles/7160762591/Martha_Graham_Arnold_Newman_p121.jpeg  Arnold Newman was a photographer who made lots of 'environmental' portraits. His subjects were often not the sole focus of the image. Rather, the background tended to compose large parts of the image instead. Usually a small portion was actually dedicated to the subject, and your eyes are usually drawn to them. In the image above, Newman captures a portrait of a dancer. This picture shows his style very well. Most of the image is empty space around the subject, but this empty space causes your eyes to find the subject right away and makes her stand out. Also, the empty space is not wasted. It tells us about who is being photographed. We can tell she is in a dance studio and therefore we are able to infer what she likes to do.

Ralph Gibson

Ralph Gibson is a photographer most well known for his use of light in his images. Lots of his photographs genuinely incorporate very high contrast with extremely dark shadows and brighter areas. In the image I chose showcasing two men riding a motorcycle outside of a car window, Gibson's style is very apparent. Lots of this image is pure black, contrasted to the extreme with the bright white center. This draws your eyes in to look at the focus of the image, a clever way of doing such. The two people on the motorcycle are also dark to make them stand out as well from the center.
