Arnold Newman was a photographer who made lots of 'environmental' portraits. His subjects were often not the sole focus of the image. Rather, the background tended to compose large parts of the image instead. Usually a small portion was actually dedicated to the subject, and your eyes are usually drawn to them.
In the image above, Newman captures a portrait of a dancer. This picture shows his style very well. Most of the image is empty space around the subject, but this empty space causes your eyes to find the subject right away and makes her stand out. Also, the empty space is not wasted. It tells us about who is being photographed. We can tell she is in a dance studio and therefore we are able to infer what she likes to do.
